About Mister Mcgregor’s Garden

Mister McGregor’s Garden is a local family-based business that has been caring for children in the Marquette area since 1979. After 40 years, Mister McGregor’s Garden is recognized as a premier leader in the community for providing children solid foundations for future success. Caring for children from birth-twelve, our focus is on developing the whole child. We provide safe, developmentally appropriate and nurturing environments that promote social, emotional, cognitive and physical growth. Our philosophy of early education is inspired by the developmental-interaction approach, which for us is dually play-based and nature-based. Children are active planners and participants of their earliest education, inspiring them to grow as thinkers, problem solvers and creators.

History

Mister McGregor’s Garden opened in August 1979, having moved from Kimball’s Home Nursery. Darlene Kimball was a pioneer in the area for providing quality, licensed, center-based programming for children. First in her home on College then her home on McClellan, later branching off and beginning the private, non-profit Little Friends’ franchise and the private McGregor Corporation for a total of five centers. Darlene wanted “every day to feel special for the children,” and she clearly instilled that in her programs. Darlene retired 2002 at the age of 72. Korry Richer, daughter and third generation childcare provider, has spent a lifetime in the arena of young children, programming, and center development. Korry’s near-first decade was learning the basics of maintenance, cooking, caregiving, and day to day operations. Further interest inspired studies of Early Child Development at NMU. This education assisted in her advancement to bookkeeping, training staff, program development and directing center-based programs. Eventually working to accredit two locations early in her directing career Korry and her team were the direct recipients of the Governor’s Quality Care award twice at the McClellan location. (One of only two centers in all of Michigan to receive the award twice and only during a four-year span). Korry transitioned to replace Darlene as coordinator in 2002. She currently operates the McGregor’s Corporation serving children and their families in Marquette and surrounding areas.

Philosophy

We believe children learn best and make sense of their world through meaningful relationships and interactions with their environment. Through investigation, creation, and exploration, children become active participants in their learning. We support both wonder and purposeful play; alongside nature-based experiences to cultivate interests of children with aspirations to enrich and assist each child in their courage, joy, imagination, independence, and confidence.

Vision Statement

At Mister McGregor’s Garden, we create a safe, nurturing, and inviting environment that encourages and challenges every child to explore, create, experiment, discover, and imagine the unimaginable. We celebrate the joy, individuality, and strengths of each child, teacher, and family to cultivate a culture of independent, confident, passionate, curious, and courageous lovers of learning. We are a garden for children to plant their roots and spread their wings.
